England beat co-host Ukraine 1-0 to move into the quarterfinals of the Euro Cup 2012. Well before the match both the teams stood a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals but a goal by Wayne Rooney sealed the deal for England as they topped group D to move into the knockout stages.
The match had its share of good and bad performances and here are some of the hits and flops of the game:
England:
Hits:
Wayne Rooney: The whole of England was waiting to see his comeback and what a way to mark it. Rooney, who played in his first match of the tournament due to a suspension, did impress everyone and scored the winning goal for his team. And his influence was not limited to that, he also made some good moves and did threaten Ukrainian defence.
John Terry: The Chelsea centre back is having a great tournament and even on Tuesday he stood rock solid in their opposition’s way. He was also extremely acrobatic and made a great clearance from the goal-line to help England secure three full points.
Flops:
Theo Walcott: He came on in the 70th and had good 20 minutes to leave an impression, but then he was horrible in the middle. He lacked the hunger to challenge and hardly was seen touching the ball. Had no impact on the match whatsoever.
Ukraine:
Artem Milevskiy: He was fast, created good moves and did exhibit a selfless game. But despite he never really looked to go for the attack himself and was not seen much making an attempt to score the goal.
Flops:
Andriy Pyatov: Had a horrible game standing in front of the nets. He failed to grip the ball on few occasions and could have conceded a goal in 24th minute but fortunately for him it did not happen. He should have reacted well to the pass that was converted into a goal and should have palmed it off.
