Euro 2012--Russia vs Poland: Hits & Flops…

After their convincing 4-1 win in the last match against Czech Republic, Russia started their second match aiming to become the first team to qualify for the quarter finals of the Euro 2012, but Poland stood in their way. Poland drew 1-1 with Russia and ensured that the competition stays open and each of the four teams now has the chance of making it in the quarterfinals.

Both the teams had some good and bad performances and here are few of the hits and flops of the match.

Russia:

Hits:

Andrei Arshavin: He is the biggest name in the Russian football presently and after a good performance in the opening match, he lived up to his reputation yesterday as well. He was a livewire in the middle and created many good chances. He formed an integral part of every Russian move but gradually his influence came down and was responsible for giving away the possession in the second half.

Yuri Zhirkov: He was a constant threat on the left and linked well with Arshavin. He got into good position many a time and did produce some deadly crosses.

Flops:

Roman Pavlyuchenko: He came in a replacement for Alexander Kerzhakov in the 70th minute, but the move proved to be a futile one as he could not help much in the game. He was least instinctive on the pitch and also had a chance to score the winner in the dying minutes of the match, but he blew it away.

Poland:

Hits:

Robert Lewandowski: He has been the third highest scorer in the Bundesliga and he carried that form into the Euro 2012. He made some good runs in the match and defenders had a hard time to contain him. He was unfortunate not to score a goal.

Jakub Błaszczykowski: The skipper was looking deadly on the right flank but his crosses were not up to the mark. Jakub however, compensated for all that as he fired in a long range shot at the top corner to find the equalizer for the home team.

Flops:

Sebastian Boenisch: He had a hard time containing the Russian forwards. Russians read that well and all their moves were made through the left flank which was manned by Sebastian.
