Mumbai: Dwayne Smith did the unthinkable when he scored a six and two fours to win the match for Mumbai Indians against defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhade Stadium here on Sunday. Getting praises from all quarters, the West Indian said that he had the confidence and backed himself to do the job.
“I knew I could do that. I just backed myself. As long as I can watch the ball I can do it. I just asked RP [Singh] to give me the three balls that were left," Smith said after the match.
Crediting Sachin Tendulkar for giving him the confidence, Smith said that the Master Blaster told him to back himself. "He said the wicket was good. He told me to back myself and he was true. It paid off. It's a big win and we really deserved it as well," he said.
Meanwhile Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming said that in IPL one individual can change the course of the match anytime.
"Dwayne Smith played an amazing innings. Hats off to him! It was a real roller-coaster. That's the beauty of IPL. The nature of T20 is the game can be won or lost by an individual. We saw that today," said Fleming after his team lost the match on the last ball.
Fleming was also in praise for Sachin Tendulkar who had a century partnership with Rohit Sharma. "The partnership he had with Rohit was wonderful. What should have been a match-winning partnership was turned around with some splendid fielding by Chennai Super Kings . It was an outstanding and clever partnership," he said.
Fleming said that they are aware that to make the play-offs they now have to win three out of their last four games. "Yes, we are aware. We have to win three out of the next four games. We have to lift ourselves. We created the opportunities to win tonight," he said.
