Bangalore: Nothing frustrates me more than dropping a catch but then this wasn’t the reason behind my decision on retirement, said Rahul Dravid to a question if dropping some easy catches in the recent times was a precursor to his decision on quitting international cricket.
Dravid though said that he wasn’t happy with his catches in the last year or so. “Last year it wasn’t the way it used to be. I dropped some of the catches which otherwise I would have banked taking on. People who played with me know how dropping catches disturb me. Nothing frustrates me more than dropping catches. If can get over with regard to my getting out easily. I can recover in 10-15 minutes but if I drop catches, it hangs on with me for long. It really hurts. But then I have to accept that as a slip fielder you do drop some,” said Dravid, who has been an excellent catcher at the slip position.
When asked about the sobriquet ‘The Wall’ attached to his name, Dravid said in a lighter vein that it was just a media creation in order to fill their headlines. “I think they (journalists) set me up like let us put the Wall…so that later we can put…like The wall crumbles or weak foundation in the wall..incase he fails… for a good headline,” said Dravid jokingly, adding that he never walked around thinking that he was ‘The Wall’. “They called up very fondly and I respect them,” said Dravid.
When asked about his best inning, Dravid said that there were many and that it would be difficult to choose favourite among the sons. “There are many. 183 in Kolkata against Australia with Laxman, 233 in Adelaide, couple of innings in Jamaica on a low scoring wicket, Headinly...innings Rawalpindi. But then choosing best among these is like choosing favourite among the sons,” he said.
