New Delhi: India’s Saina Nehwal got the better of Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand to enter into the second round of women’s singles event at the All England Badminton Championships on Wednesday.
In a match that lasted for 57 minutes saw World No.4 sweat it out hard against the Thai qualifier as after taking the first set 21-11, the Indian ace lost the next 13-21. But Saina managed to rope in the third set 21-13.
Meanwhile, Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta won their women's doubles opening round match beating Indonesian duo of Anneke Feinya Agustin and Nitya Krishinda Maheshwari 21-16, 21-16 in 34 minutes.
P.V. Sindhu, who qualified for the main draw, faces Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei in her opening battle, while Ajay Jayaram will take on China's Lin Dan in the men's singles first round. V. Diju and Gutta play their mixed doubles opening round match later in the day.
