Manila: Thailand’s rising star Sattaya Supupramai savoured a memorable week by claiming his maiden victory on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) with a closing five-under-par 67 to win the ICTSI Mount Malarayat Classic on Saturday.

After four days of intense battle, Sattaya finally emerged top of the class when he traded one eagle and six birdies against three bogeys for a four-day total of 21-under-par 267 to edge Filipino veteran Antonio Lascuna by three shots at the US$60,000 ADT event.

Lascuna, who led for the first three rounds, mixed his card with four birdies and two bogeys for a final round 70 to take the second place at the Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club.

Local hope Angelo Que, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour, totalled 273 for a third-placed finish while fellow compatriot, Miguel Tabuena, who returned with the day’s lowest score of 64, settled for fourth place on 274.

Another Filipino, Elmer Salvador, who successfully defended his title at the Aboitiz Invitational last week, recorded a final round 66 to take a share of fifth place with Korean Park Il-hwan, Canadian Lindsay Renolds and Australian Darren Tan on 276 total.

Sattaya, who was playing in his first ADT event of the year, credited the recent change in his mental game for his victory.

“I am happy with my win. I had fun and I enjoyed myself this week. I was just thinking about my game and that concentration kept me going. I tried to change my mindset recently. I told myself to just play for fun and did not put any pressure on myself. I guess that kind of work out for me this week,” said the 29-year-old.

“I look forward to playing more on the ADT and the Asian Tour. I think I still have a lot of room for improvement. I’m planning to celebrate with my friends on Tour over dinner tonight before I return to Thailand to celebrate with my family tomorrow,” added Sattaya, who regained his Asian Tour card earlier this year at the Qualifying School in Thailand where he finished inside the top-40.

The Thai will take home a winner’s prize purse of US$10,500 and receive six Official World Golf Ranking points courtesy of his triumph this week.

Meanwhile Lascuna is delighted with his performance despite missing out on his win.

“I’m very happy with how I’ve played this week. My putting was better today and I had a very good round. I’m not disappointed at all. I’m looking forward to play in the ADT event next week already!” said the modest Filipino.

“I think Sattaya is a very good player. He has shown great improvements from last year. I believe he will do better in future,” added the 42-year-old Lascuna.

The top three players to finish on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of this season will receive Asian Tour cards for 2014.

All ADT events also receive Official World Golf Ranking points, which will be used to determine the field for the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne in November and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Winners on the ADT will receive a minimum of six world ranking points while the top six players and ties will earn points based on a sliding scale.
