Siddikur aims to shine at Volvik Hildesheim Open J Golf Series

Seoul: Siddikur of Bangladesh will be looking to end his two-year title drought at the inaugural Volvik Hildesheim Open J Golf Series which makes its debut at the Hildesheim Country Club in Chungchung north province from June 21 to 24.

The 27-year-old Bangladeshi wrote a slice of history when he became the first player from Bangladesh to play and win on the Asian Tour.

While it has been two barren years since his maiden victory in Brunei, Siddikur has continued to put in several solid performances on the Asian Tour despite not returning to the winner’s circle.

Siddikur, who single-handedly shone the spotlight on golf in Bangladesh with his achievements, notched up five top-10 finishes to finish in eighth position on the Order of Merit last season.

The Bangladeshi has not missed any cuts this season and has continued to put in several more impressive performances including two top-five finishes.

“It is disappointing to come so close on so many occasions but my second victory will come soon enough, I’m very confident of that,” said Siddikur.

Like Siddikur, who is now regarded as the flag bearer of golf in Bangladesh, Singapore’s Mardan Mamat is also another contender looking for a confidence-boosting performance at the US$300,000 full field Asian Tour event.

The three-time Asian Tour winner will head to Royal Lytham St Anne, Lancashire for the British Open next month and knows that a good result in Korea will give him the confidence to take on the world’s best players at the world’s oldest Major.

The Singapore ended a six-year title drought in the Philippines in February and will be banking on his resurgence in form to lead him towards a grandstand finish.

“It means a lot (winning in the 40s). I’ve seen players on the US and European Tours winning in their 40s and it encouraged me a lot. I kept myself fit and worked hard on my game so I would be the same as them,” said Mardan.

Other Asian Tour stars who will feature in the Volvik Hildesheim Open J Golf Series include Australia’s Scott Hend, a two-time Asian Tour winner, India’s Himmat Rai and Malaysia’s Danny Chia.

The Volvik Hildesheim Open J Golf Series will be jointly sanctioned with the Korean Golf Tour and will be the 12th leg of the 2012 Asian Tour Schedule and also the third event to be staged in Korea this season.

Volvik, the leading manufacturer of colour golf balls produced in Korea, is title sponsoring the tournament as an expansion to an earlier commitment to support professional golf at the highest level in Asia.

This is also the first time a golf ball manufacturer is title sponsoring a tournament on the Asian Tour.
