New Delhi: A strong Indian team spearheaded by National Senior Amateur Champion, Asian Games Gold Medallist & Arjun Awardee Amit Luthra is headed to Qingdao,China for the Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Golf Championship to be held from Oct 14-16 at the Linghai Hot Springs Golf Club.
The six-member team, apart from Amit, comprises of Kapil Dev, Gangesh Khaitan, IPS Mann, R Yadav and Vijay Kumar. Golfers from over 30 countries will be vying honours in the three-day event. India’s best finish has been a bronze medal.
“We have a pretty strong team and we are aiming for the gold,” said Amit before the team’s departure. “I have fond memories of my gold medal at the Asian Games in 1982. We will strive to get home the coveted medal in the senior category,” he added.
Meanwhile, Indian cricketer of the Century award winner Kapil Dev who has taken to golf was upbeat about the team’s performance. “This will be like playing in the World Cup for us. I have played regularly with every one of them and I think we gel as a team. We hope to win the gold” said the former Indian captain.
The team leaves for China on Saturday.
