After the women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa and the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy had lost their respective first round matches, shuttlers Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu provided the silver lining here on Thursday, winning their opening matches in the women's singles competition.
According to a report in The Times Of India, Saina, the bronze medallist at the London Games, needed 39 minutes to beat Brazil's Lohaynny Vicente 2117, 21-17 in Group G. “Ninth seed Sindhu defeated Laura Sarosi of Hungary 21-8, 21-9 in a Group M match that lasted for 27 minutes. She will play against Glasgow Commonwealth Games champion Li Michelle of Canada on Sunday to complete the preliminary group engagements. Sindhu didn't break any sweat against her world No. 64 rival as she took 13 and 14 minutes to wrap up the first and second games,” says the report.
Meanwhile, Srikanth Kidambi defeated Lino Munoz of Mexico 21-11, 21-17 in men's singles Group H tie to start his campaign with a resounding win, says a report in the Firstpost.
According to the report, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna crushed Samantha Stosur and John Peers from Australia 7-5, 6-4 to enter the mixed doubles quarterfinals. “Sania and Rohan will face Great Britain's Andy Murray and Heather Watson in the mixed doubles quarters. Murray and Watson beat Carla Suarez Navarro and David Ferrer 6-3, 6-3 in their mixed doubles opener,” says the report.
