BCCI may impose a life ban on former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi at a Special General Meeting

The BCCI in all likelihood will impose a life ban on former IPL commissioner and its vice-president Lalit Modi at a Special General Meeting (SGM) to be convened in Chennai on September 25, says a report in DNA.

According to the report, a senior BCCI official on Monday informed that the contents of the exhaustive report filed by disciplinary committee comprising of Jyotiraditya Scindia and Arun Jaitley was discussed at the Working Committee meeting in Kolkata on Sunday. "The committee's report has suggested imposing a life ban on Lalit Modi. To decide on his fate, a special general body meeting has been summoned in Chennai on September 25 to decide on the issue. As of now, the life ban looks imminent," the official said.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Modi has been found guilty of alleged bid rigging by adding unreasonable clauses in the tender draft to buy two new teams to favour two companies. The report also puts Modi in the dock for allegedly not disclosing that his relatives had stake in a company that purchased rights for the IPL web site, using arm-twisting tactics against the Kochi franchise as well as attempting to float a rebel league in England. It also found lapses on the part of Modi in awarding theatrical rights.

He was, however, given a clean chit in the proxy ownership case where it was alleged that he had a stake in three IPL teams - Kolkata, Rajasthan and Mohali.

The disciplinary committee comprising Arun Jaitley, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirayu Amin has also found Modi guilty of allegedly misusing his powers and holding a grudge against the Kochi franchise.

Meanwhile a report in Hindustan Times says that apart from taking a final decision on former BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi at the special general meeting in Chennai on September 25, N Srinivasan would use the opportunity to gauge the mood within the board before the AGM four days later. The special disciplinary committee -- comprising  Arun Jaitley, Chirayu Amin and Jyotiraditya Scindia -- for the inquiry against the former domestic T20 league commissioner is likely to seek a vote on banning Modi for life.

The decision was conveyed to a few top BCCI officials at Sunday’s emergent working committee here but it wasn’t announced. “It was decided to hold a special general meeting in Chennai on September 25 to announce this decision and get it approved at the AGM on September 29,” said a BCCI source seeking anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
