I was pondering on resigning as IPL chairman for quite some time now: Shukla

“I have decided to quite as IPL Chairman,” said Rajiv Shukla. He also cleared the air that his resignation has got nothing to do with the investigations done on Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of BCCI Chief, N Srinivasan.

His resignation has again sparked up the demand for the resignation of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief N Srinivasan. His decision came just a day before the important meeting of BCCI’s that was called by Srinivasan to make a crucial decision on the scandals of spot-fixing and betting.

He was quoted by Hindustan Times saying, "I have decided to quit as IPL Chairman. It is a decision which I was pondering over for some time. I think it is time to step down. I was given the task of IPL Chairmanship which I tried to perform to the best of my abilities. The tournament was organised well despite all the controversies. The stadiums were jam-packed which proved that IPL was still popular.”

Meanwhile, the former Indian wicket-keeper, Syed Kirmani on Saturday demanded some stringent laws to prevent these kinds of scandals which have not done any good to the sports.

He was quoted by Indian Express saying, "I am disappointed with the way these things have turned out and there should be stringent laws to prevent betting in cricket. I don’t demand any resignation from anyone but please don’t tarnish the spirit of the game with such scams.”

Srinivasan is under immense pressure to quit from his post in the wake of the arrest of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan on charges of betting in IPL.
