Although I am a boxer, I want my kids to be shooters and not boxers: Mary Kom

Five time World Champion and London Olympics bronze medallist MC Mary Kom wants her sons to take up shooting rather than her own sport which is boxing, says a report in The Hindustan Times.

"I want my children to take up shooting, and not boxing. As a mother I can see that it is a very safe sport and I will be very happy if both my sons can become good shooters," Mary said.

Mary was speaking at the launch of the SEED Gun for Glory Shooting Championship in Pune. Mary also praised the academy for their support for shooting.

"The success of Indian shooting at the London Olympics needs to percolate down to the grass-root level, and I hope the Gun for Glory Shooting Academy will further popularise shooting amongst our youngsters," she said.

London Olympics bronze medallist Gagan Narang who was also present at the event thanked SEED.

"I am thankful to SEED Infotech for promoting shooting amongst the young aspirants and budding shooters. The championship is an unique concept to discover the joy of shooting and learning the sport,” he said.

Narang also thanked Mary Kom, “Mary Kom is an inspiration to millions of youth in India, and I'm confident that her efforts to encourage shooting will bear rich results for Indian shooting," he said.

Meanwhile, The Times of India reports that Gagan Narang who was present at the event handed MC Mary Kom  an air pistol for her kids to practice with.

Mary in the event showed her singing talent as well, she said, “If I weren't a boxer, I could have become anything else. I also cook very well!"
