Munich (Germany): Bayern Munich has taken a huge leap to proceed into the Champions League final after a late goal by Mario Gomez saw them beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the first leg semi finals of the 2012 Champions League played at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.
Frank Ribery who saw a penalty appeal being turned down, fired Bayern in front with a close strike in the 17th minute. The goal pumped up the hosts and they started making frequent raids at their opponent’s citadel. They almost went 2-0 up in the 39th minute of the match when Mario Gomez‘s shot was saved by a brilliant Iker Cassilas diving save.
After the change of ends, things changed for Real as they found the equalizer in the just seventh minute into the half when Mesut Oezil found the nets for his team.
Bayern looked a far better team on display and created opportunities as well but lack of good finishing kept on denying them until the 90th minute strike from Mario Gomez.
This win helped the Bavarians maintain their undefeated streak at home against Real and they now have nine wins and one draw since 1976. Bayern who are now in the driver’s seat back to Allianz Arena which would the finals on May 19th and will be very confident when they travel to St. Bernabeu later this month for the return leg.
