I-League: Shillong Lajong defeat East Bengal

Shillong: Shillong Lajong came from behind to shock Kingfisher East Bengal 2-1, in the 20th round I League encounter, played at the JN Sport Complex on Saturday

 

East Bengal foreign recruit Tolgay Ozbey opened the score in 4th minute. While John Menyongar restored parity for the Shillong Lajong in 12th minute and Eugeneson Lyngdoh doubled the lead in 16th minutes.

 

The tourist who took an early lead when Tolgay Ozbey dribble pass three defenders and beat local custodian Soram Poirei Angamba to found the back of the net.

 

However, East Bengal joy was short lived as in the 12th minute, John D. Menyongar placed the deflected ball from the free kick taken by Mathew Osvaldo Mayora into the net to restore parity for the home side.

 

Fans of the local football giant erupted in frenzy as they egged their local team to take the lead. Buoyed by the crowd support and the equalizer, four minutes later Eugeneson Lyngdoh doubled the lead for the host on a cross from C Lallawmzuala’s.

 

From this point onward, the hosts dominated the proceeding keeping the tourists defense line busy. The experienced Red and Gold brigade did come close to score equaliser, but it was not their day as luck failed to oblige.

 

In the 33rd minute of the game Robin Singh shot was easily saved by Lajong custodian, had he crossed the ball for Tolgay the result could have been different.

 

Changing the side, East Bengal put up all their efforts to breach the Lajong defence line, but all in vvain as it was not their day at all.

 

Shillong Lajong now have 27 points from 20 outings while East Bengal stays at 35 points from 20 matches.
