Euro 2016: Wales stun Belgium 3-1 to reach semi-finals

Gareth BaleIn an exhilarating game in northern France, Wales went one better than their 1958 predecessors who had reached the last eight of the World Cup in 1958 World Cup in Sweden. However, the game got off to a tense start after Wales fell behind to Radja Nainggolan's strike in the first 15 minutes.

But the team thundered back with Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu and substitute Sam Vokes proving the goal-scoring heroes.

It was a crushing blow for heavy favourites Belgium, who had taken the lead in the 13th minute when Radja Nainggolan rifled the ball into the top corner from distance for Wales captain Ashley Williams to level with a header from a corner.

After Ashley Williams tied the game in the first half, Hal Robson-Kanu gave Wales the lead with a fabuoulous piece of individual skill. In one swoop, he sent three Belgium players — defenders Thomas Meunier, Jason Denayer and Marouane Fellaini, the wrong way and then unleashes a deadly finish straight to the back of the net with his left foot and Thibaut Courtois had no chance to save that shot.

While Welsh players like Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey were playing really fantastic football, Romelu Lukaku squandered all the Belgium’s chances. The striker should have scored for Belgium after seven minutes when, he didn't react sharply enough to an inviting ball off a corner. His failure to have a big impact up front was a fatal weakness in a team as he missed several crucial chances upfront.

At the other end for Wales, unheralded second-half substitute Sam Vokesgive Wales their third goal. His perfectly judged glancing header off Chris Gunter's cross secured the come-from-behind win for Wales

The country of three million people that hasn't played in a major tournament since a goal from 17-year-old Pele put Wales out of the 1958 World Cup will now get to measure itself against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the Semi-finals of Euro 2016. Unfortunately for Wales, Ramsey will miss the semi-final against Portugal after picking up his second yellow card for a second-half handball. Also suspended will be defender Ben Davies. The two Real Madrid team mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale will now face each other in the Semi-finals.
