Cricket is one of the fastest evolving sport of our times and over the ages bowling as an art has become more demanding and at the same time has given the bowlers little or no margin for error. The modern batsmen can hit the best of deliveries out of the ground, courtesy the wide range of shots that have developed over a period of time.
The times have changed and batsmen come out to bat with a different mindset altogether. The modern batsmen back themselves to play their shots irrespective of the bowlers and that is one of the primary reasons why teams sometimes find it very difficult to identify what is a good first innings total in a T20 game because everything you put on the board is to a large extent chase-able.
Bowlers these days, thus, have a huge task ahead of them and a dot delivery is evidently a golden delivery. In such times, a hat-trick by a bowler is certainly a commendable achievement.
In the History of Indian Premier League (IPL) 16 hat-tricks have been taken, including the latest one by Andrew Tye of Gujarat Lions against the Rising Pune Supergiant. Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra features thrice in the list showing his class again and again; interestingly all three times he played for different franchises (Delhi Daredevils in 2008; Deccan Chargers in 2011; and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013). Rather surprisingly, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma also feature in the list, with Yuvraj claiming two hat-tricks in the second edition of the IPL.
Only 5 of these 16 hat-tricks have been taken by overseas bowlers- Makhaya Ntini in 2008, Sunil Narine in 2012, Shane Watson in 2014, and Samuel Badree and Andrew Tye in 2017.
