I started enjoying life only after my heart surgery in Australia in 2005, says Chris Gayle

Virender Sehwag Chris Gayle Anurag ThakurNew Delhi: To the world he might seem to be a happy-go-lucky man who enjoys life to the fullest, but not many know that Chris Gayle -- the legendary West Indies batsman who has sent many a bowlers on leather hunt – started enjoying life only after he underwent a heart surgery in Australia way back in 2005.

According to Gayle, who had to go through an operation to repair a hole in his heart, not even his parents knew about it and he only revealed it to them after the procedure. “I was forced to undergo a surgery and I informed my parents about it only after the procedure,” Gayle said this during the launch of his autobiography “Six Machine” in New Delhi on Friday.

He added that it was after this incident that he realised the importance of life. “It was a life changing moment for me. Thereafter, I decided to enjoy my life to the fullest and I am doing exactly that,” he said.

Meanwhile, talking about his book, he said that his autobiography covers his journey from a young Jamaican boy to being the cricketer that he is at present. The book, which was unveiled by Lt Anurag Thakur, President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at a city hotel in New Delhi, covers extensively about his personal life and career.

Gayle said that he was really excited about releasing his first book. “I hope it can reach far and wide, through cricket and beyond, for there are stories to tell and secrets I've waited a long time to share. Being me is fun. I don't believe in boring. And 'Six Machine' is me, in every way. This book will be an inspiration for many across the world.”

He also talked about his struggle he faced in his early years. “This book will give insight to different side of Gayle,” said the West Indian.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag, who was also present on the occasion, wished him luck and said that Chris Gayle was one of the most fun loving and genuine people that he had the pleasure to interact with. “His love for cricket shines through his batting. I am glad that more people will get to know the real Chris, the person behind the persona. I am confident that “Six Machine” will be well received by cricketing fans all over the world,” said Sehwag.

The Najafgarh Nawab, who is known for his humour, said, “Chris has scored a three hundred, but doesn’t have a five-wicket haul like me”, to which Gayle replied ‘I also have 5-wicket haul in Test...Mr Viru!”

Meanwhile, BCCI President Lt Anurag Thakur, said, “The title of Chris Gayle’s autobiography, ‘Six Machine’ aptly describes him and it has indeed been sheer delight to witness the cricket phenomenon created by him. He is one of those fine cricketers whose success will not solely be measured basis the score sheet. He has enthralled the audience with his batting skills, and will certainly continue to do so. I am happy to be associated with the launch of his autobiography, and wish ‘Six Machine’ all the success.”
