Mirpur: After India lost its openers (Shikhar Dhawan 1 and Rohit Sharma 15) cheaply within four overs, in-form Virat Kohli (56 off 47 balls) steadied India’s innings with Suresh Raina (25 off 26 balls) and later veteran Yuvraj Singh made a quick-fire (35 off 18 balls) to give India a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the encounter at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on Tuesday.
Chasing 138, India once again had a bad start as Shikhar Dhawan edged K Kulasekra through to Dinesh Chandimal on the last ball of the second over. Eight balls later Kulasekara struck again as Sharma egded his length ball to Kapugedera at the slip.
Thereafter, Raina joined Kohli and the duo started stitching the Indian innings, with Kohli taking the charge. The duo added 54 runs for the third wicket before Raina was caught by Kulasekara at mid-off off Shanaka’s delivery in the 12th over.
Yuvraj joined Kohli and the complexion of the game changed completely in India’s favour as the left-hander sent the Sri Lankan bowlers on leather hunt, hitting 35 off 18 balls before top edging Perera’s bouncer to Kulasekara at fine leg. But by then India already were too close to the target.
However Chamara Kapugedera and Milinda Siriwardanashowed some resistance and added 43 runs for the fifth wicket and later the tail enders added some valuable runs to take Sri Lanka to 138 for 9 in 20 overs.
For India, Jasprit Pandya, R Ashwin and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each, while Ashish Nehra took one wicket.
