World Cup: Kohli, Shami help India beat Pakistan by 76 runs

viratAdelaide: A composed century by man-in-form Virat Kohli, followed by fantastic bowling (4-35) from Mohammed Shami helped India beat its arch rivals Pakistan by 76 runs in yet another World Cup encounter at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

With this win, India kept its slate clean by winning six World Cup matches between the countries since 1991.

After Rohit Shrma fell for 15 in the 8th over, Kohli shared two centuries stands – one each with Shikhar Dhawan (73) and Suresh Raina (74) – and went on to score 107 runs off 126 balls.

However, when it looked India would go past 320, the middle order collapsed to some disciplined bowling by Sohail Khan towards the end. Sohail ended with a five-wicket haul (5-55) and restricted India to 300.

A 300-plus score was always going to be a big ask for Pakistan and the early wicket of Younis Khan in the 4th over didn’t help their cause either. Though Ahmed Shehzad and Haris Sohail knitted the Pakistan innings and took the total to 79 before Sohail fell in the 18th over, three successive wickets (Shehzad, Shoaib Maqsood, Umar Akmal) for just one run titled the match in India’s favour.

Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq along with Shahid Afridi did add 46 runs in the middle, but it wasn’t enough to steer Pakistan to safety.

Finally, India won by 76 runs.
