National Chess: Akash shocks Kulkarni

National ChessTirupathi: Talented Tamilnadu youngster G Akash stunned top seed and defending champion Vikramaditya Kulkarni of Railways in the fifth round to take the joint lead along with third seed Debashis Das of Orissa in the 50th National Challengers Chess Championship here on Monday.

Playing with white pieces in Taimanov variation of Sicilian defence, Akash controlled the game from the opening itself and garnered full point against his top seed rival after 45 moves while Debashis Das outwitted overnight joint leader Saptarshi Roy of Railways to maintain his perfect score in 58 moves arrived out of Dutch defence game.


Four players including CRG Krishna of Andhra Pradesh, who defeated Utakal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa in a marathon fifth round match is sharing the second spot with a drift of half point from the leaders.  International Master B T Murali Krishna of Railways, Fide Master Diptayan Ghosh of West Bengal and Sohan Phadke of Maharashtra giving company to Krishna in the second spot after defeating Praveen Prasad of Andhra Pradesh, Anurag Mhamal of Goa and International Master Ramnath Bhuvanesh of Tamilnadu respectively in the fifth round encounters.

The sixth round matches of the thirteen round system championship are now underway at the time of report.
