New Delhi: ONGC beat IOCL (3-0) in the men’s team championships final at the 35th PSPB Inter-unit Badminton tournament being played at the DDA squash and badminton stadium here on Tuesday.
National champion Saurabh Verma (ONGC) was in sublime form when he prevailed over P Kashyap (IOCL), whose latest world ranking is 14. Saurabh won the first game comfortably at 21-13. The second was closely contested and witnessed some good rallies before Saurabh won it 22-20. In the other singles H S Prannoy (ONGC) came up against stiff resistance from K Srikanth (IOCL). In a gripping 3 setter Prannoy beat Srikanth 21-16, 11-21, 21-19.
In the doubles Rupesh Kumar and V Diju (ONGC) beat Arun Vishnu and K Srikanth (IOCL) 21-16, 22-20.
It was a good day for BPCL who won both the Women team championships and the Veterans team championships.
In the Women’s team championship finals BPCL prevailed over IOCL (2-1) with some gripping matches. Playing the first singles P V SIndhu (BPCL) lost the first game to a spirited Tanvi Lad (IOCL) 19-21. However Sindhu soon got the measure of Tanvi and worked the court well to win the next 2 games 21-6 and 21-9 and won her match.
In the doubles Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant (IOCL) played an attacking game and in the most exciting match of the day prevailed over the marquee pairing of Jwala Gutta and PV Sindhu (BPCL), 21-14, 26-24.
This necessitated the need to play the deciding second singles match in which Aditi Mutatkar (BPCL) was dominant in her win over Trupti Murgunde (IOCL) with the score reading 21-16, 21-11.
In the Veterans Team Championships finals BPCL beat GAIL (2-0). In the first singles George Thomas (BPCL) beat Ajay Jindal (GAIL) 21-14, 21-13. In the doubles Milind Ghate and Bhushan AKut (BPCL) prevailed over Ajay Jindal and K S Kumaresan (GAIL) quite comfortably 21-11, 21-7.
The afternoon session the men’s singles, the women’s singles and the women’s doubles matches were played. The most exciting match of the evening when PC Thulasi beat Aditi Mutatkar 21-16, 18-21, 21-13.
The matches scheduled for tomorrow will begin at 10.40 am with the singles in both men and women categories scheduled to be played along with the men doubles.
The beautiful DDA squash and Badminton stadium came in for praise from the various managers of the petroleum companies who were there with their teams for the team championships.
