She beat Makarova 6-4,6-0.
Serena will now meet Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic who beat Maria Kirilenko 5-7 6-4 6-4.
Meanwhile, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska beat Jelena Jankovic 6-3 7-5 to reach the fourth round while Italian Roberta Vinci beat 13th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 7-5 to enter the round of 16.
