Paris: French players had a good opening day in the Roland Garros, 2012. Both Nicolas Mahut and the fifth seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won their respective matches to move into the next round.

Mahut defeated world number 26 Andy Roddick from the US. Roddick has been suffering from an injury from the past one year went into the match to change his record which is not good in the tournament, he however found it tough against the Frenchman and lost 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Tsonga had a bad start against Andrey Kuznetsov from Russia and lost the first set. He then came back strongly and finished the match in style. He outplayed his opponent 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

In another match Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina defeated Albert Montanes 6-2 6-7 6-2 6-1.
In the women singles’ Samantha Stosur defeated Elena Baltacha 6-4 6-0
