London: Indian women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa failed to qualify for the quarterfinals despite their comfortable win over Lei Yao and Shinta Mulia Sari of Singapore. This was the second consecutive win for the Indian pair but based on the difference between points won and lost in all matches, the Indian pair found themselves at number three and that cut short their Olympic campaign.
The Indian pair looked good in the match and finished off their opponent in straight games, 21-16 21-15 in just over 30 minutes.
Both Gutta and Ponnappa looked focus and they hardly had very few unforced errors in the match. Ponnappa was in great touch with her strong smashes from the back of the court, giving Gutta the opportunity to finish of the points.
The Indians got the early lead of 18-10 in the first game and won it without any fuss. In the second game, the Indian pair got off to a rollicking start and took the initial lead of 9-0. The Singaporeans did come close, but couldn’t threaten the Indian pair much. It was very unfortunate for the Indian pair to miss out on a quarterfinals spot despite their fabulous show.
