The Ministry suspended TTFI’s recognition with immediate effect on August 12, 2026, citing governance failures, financial lapses and concerns over athlete welfare, and directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad-hoc committee, in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), to run the sport’s affairs in the interim.

TTFI’s response

TTFI has acknowledged the Ministry’s directive while making clear it disagrees with the decision. In a statement, the federation said it holds the Ministry in the highest regard but argued that governance of an autonomous national sports federation is a matter for its own Constitution and General Body, guided by the principles of sporting autonomy recognised under Rules 27 and 28 of the Olympic Charter.

The federation, registered as an autonomous society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, said the Olympic Charter and the ITTF’s own statutes protect the autonomy of national federations and require them to function free of third-party interference.

Federation says issues were already addressed

TTFI maintains that the concerns raised in the Ministry’s show-cause notice of June 30, 2026 had either already been resolved or needed further clarification. It says it laid this out in a detailed reply sent to the Ministry on July 7, 2026, backed by minutes, resolutions and audited records, and argues that each deficiency cited in the suspension order was either factually incorrect or had been fixed before the notice was even issued.

As evidence of the federation functioning effectively, TTFI pointed to five Indian women and three Indian men currently ranked in the ITTF world top-100 and top-50 respectively, along with medal-winning performances at the 2026 Asian Games and Asian Youth Championships, and what it called a robust junior pipeline.

What TTFI wants next

The federation says it remains in close contact with the Ministry and is committed to addressing any concerns raised. It has asked the Ministry to keep the August 12 order in abeyance and reconsider the matter, while reiterating its commitment to good governance under the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011, and the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.

Why the Ministry stepped in

TTFI’s recognition was suspended through Order No. 47-05/2026-GOV-2, and the Ministry has pointed to several issues behind the decision. Chief among them is the federation’s failure to hold elections on time, despite repeated reminders and a show-cause notice issued on June 30, 2026. The Ministry found TTFI’s response to that notice unsatisfactory.

The order also flags a running dispute between TTFI’s top office-bearers — president Meghna Ahlawat and secretary general Kamlesh Mehta — which the Ministry says affected the federation’s decision-making and policy implementation.

Athlete welfare features prominently in the Ministry’s reasoning too. It has cited delays in holding the National Championships and controversy over player selection, including the exclusion of Manika Batra from the main Asian Games squad, as evidence of the federation’s shortcomings.

Financial transparency was another sticking point, with the Ministry noting delays in submitting and adopting audited accounts for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The order also cites broader non-compliance with government directives and a disregard for the accountability and democratic functioning expected of a national sports federation.

What happens now

With TTFI’s recognition suspended, the IOA has been tasked with setting up an ad-hoc committee, working with the ITTF, to oversee the sport in the interim. It is not yet clear how long the arrangement will last, or whether TTFI’s request to hold the order in abeyance will be considered.

New Delhi: The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has pushed back against the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ decision to suspend its recognition, calling the action unwarranted and asking the government to hold the order in abeyance.
