{"id":22007,"date":"2011-05-31T06:25:10","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T06:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.com\/?p=22007"},"modified":"2011-05-31T06:25:10","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T06:25:10","slug":"sailing-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.com\/?p=22007","title":{"rendered":"Sailing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-22006\" src=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/know-sailing.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" width=\"172\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/indiansportsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/know-sailing.jpg 172w, https:\/\/indiansportsnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/know-sailing-150x171.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sailing is a sport played in seas with the help of wind.<\/li>\n<li>The art of controlling a boat with large foils called sails.<\/li>\n<li>By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rules<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boats on a port tack shall give way to boats on starboard tack .<\/li>\n<li>When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, the boat to windward (the boat closest to the wind) shall keep clear of a leeward boat.<\/li>\n<li>When boats are on the same tack and not overlapped, the boat that is astern shall keep clear of the boat ahead.<\/li>\n<li>When a boat is tacking (changing tack) it shall keep clear of boats that are not tacking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Kinds of boats used<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dinghies<\/li>\n<li>Windsurfers<\/li>\n<li>Multi hulls<\/li>\n<li>Yachts<\/li>\n<li>Kite surfing<\/li>\n<li>Radio controlled sailing boats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Race signals<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preparatory signal<\/li>\n<li>Start signal<\/li>\n<li>Recall signal<\/li>\n<li>Course change signal<\/li>\n<li>Postponement signal<\/li>\n<li>Abandonment signal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Types of races<\/p>\n<p>Harbor or buoy racing<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Harbor or buoy races are conducted in protected waters, and are quite short, usually taking anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.<\/li>\n<li>All sorts of sailing craft are used for these races, including keel-boats of all sizes, as well as dinghies, trailer sailors, catamarans, skiffs, sailboards, and other small craft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Inshore racing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&bull; &nbsp;Inshore racing is yacht racing not in protected waters but along and generally from land to nearby islands.<br \/>The duration of races maybe daylight only.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Offshore racing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Offshore yacht races are held over long distances and in open water; such races usually last for at least a number of hours.<\/li>\n<li>Match Racing<\/li>\n<li>In match racing only two boats compete against each other. The best known competition of this type is the America&#8217;s Cup.<\/li>\n<li>Three peaks yacht race<\/li>\n<li>It is a team competition involving sailing, cycling and running.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Basic sailing techniques<\/p>\n<p>Trim<br \/><\/strong><br \/>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;This is the fore and aft balance of the boat.<br \/>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The aim is to adjust the moveable ballast (the crew) forwards or backwards to achieve an &#8216;even keel&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tacking and jibing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;There are two ways to change course by turning either the bow through the eye of the wind, &#8220;tacking&#8221; or the stern, &#8220;jibing.&#8221;<br \/>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Tacking is the safer method and preferred especially when sailing upwind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reducing sail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;An important safety aspect of sailing is to adjust the amount of sail to suit the wind conditions.<br \/>&bull;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;As the wind speed increases the crew should progressively reduce the amount of sail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sail trimming<\/p>\n<p><\/strong>The most basic control of the sail consists of setting its angle relative to the wind.
