Virat Kohli has moved to within 20 rating points of India captain Shubman Gill at the top of the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings, even though both scored centuries in the first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Kohli’s unbeaten 139 from 88 balls took him past 15,000 ODI runs as India chased down 296 with 50 balls to spare. It was his 55th ODI hundred, and it lifted him past Daryl Mitchell into second place.

Gap down to 20 points

Before the match Kohli was 34 points behind Gill, who was on 801. Gill’s 110 took him to 816, but Kohli climbed from 767 to 796 to cut the gap by 14 points. Kohli’s rating is now his highest since July 2022.

Kohli was No. 3 for three days in January this year. He has spent 1,547 days at No. 1 in all, and only West Indies greats Vivian Richards and Brian Lara have spent longer there.

Kuldeep Yadav into top five

Kuldeep Yadav’s four for 40 in Thiruvananthapuram lifted him four places to fifth in the bowling rankings. South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj moved up three places to third after taking six wickets in two ODIs against Australia.

Prasidh Krishna gained six places to 42nd. Josh Hazlewood is back in the top 10 after three wickets at the Wanderers, and his Australia team-mate Nathan Ellis rose two places to 15th. West Indies’ Jayden Seales moved up four to 22nd and Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalage 12 to 26th.

Other batting movers

England opener Tom Banton jumped 333 places to 83rd after his 126 off 105 balls earned him the Player of the Match award in the third ODI against Sri Lanka. Kusal Mendis, who made 198 runs in that series, is at a career-best seventh, and Ben Duckett moved up four places to 15th.

Matthew Breetzke’s 136 runs, including a century in the series opener in Durban, took him up 19 places to 21st. David Miller returned to the rankings at 41st after scoring 151 runs, including a hundred in Johannesburg.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma made a century in the second match as his side took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Australia. He moved up 10 places to 32nd. Will Jacks climbed six places to 71st and Marco Jansen 42 places to 87th.

The weekly update covers the last two matches of the England-Sri Lanka series, the first two ODIs between South Africa and Australia, and the match in Thiruvananthapuram.
