Colombo: Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando and India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have each been fined 25 per cent of their match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day of the second Test in Colombo on Sunday.
Both players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match.
One demerit point has also been added to the disciplinary records of Fernando and Jaiswal. Neither player had committed an offence during the previous 24 months.
Fernando-Jaiswal confrontation after dismissal
The incident took place after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India’s first innings.
Jaiswal walked towards the Sri Lankan bowler and the two exchanged words. Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, who leant in response, resulting in their heads making contact.
The confrontation led to disciplinary action against both players under the ICC Code of Conduct.
Both players accept ICC sanctions
Fernando and Jaiswal admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, no formal hearings were required.
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee. They can also result in one or two demerit points.
