New Delhi: All the three finals scheduled for the day ran true to form at the PSPB Inter Unit Tennis Tournament hosted by EIL and played at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex. All the higher ranked players played well and won comfortably.
The Bhambri pair played some quality percentage tennis to win their matches. In the men’s singles finals Yuki Bhambri (ONGC) beat team mate and big serving Vishnu Vardhan (ONGC) in straight sets 6-4,6-3. Yuki whose form has been poor in recent times, showed that he is getting back into the groove and played quality tennis to beat Vishnu. The advantage of knowing Vishnu’s game well seemed to help and Yuki won quite comfortably.
In the womens singles final Yuki’s cousin sister Prerna Bhambri (GAIL) played equally well to beat Dhruti Venugopal (ONGC) 6-1, 7-5. After losing the first set to Prerna who was in top form, Dhruti managed to raise her game and matched Prerna shot to shot before succumbing. “I played my natural game and I played very well and while the score may not suggest it, we had a good tough match” said Prerna after the finals.
In the Veteran Singles Final, fancied Hakim Ali (OIL) beat Bhushan Akut (BPCL) 6-3, 6-4. A relaxed Hakim displayed good court craft to beat Bhushan and won quite comfortably.
In the Prize Distribution ceremony held on the centre court of the beautiful RK Khanna Complex, Ajay N Deshpande, Dir Technical of EIL was the Chief Guest and gave away the prizes. And in his closing words to the spectators Yuki had some good advice for juniors “Commit yourself to the sport completely if you want to do well and enjoy it, and that’s what will take you through”
