Miami: Seventh seeded pair of Indo-Czech pair of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek defeated second seed pair of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 to win the Sony Ericsson Open on Saturday. This win was their second victory of the season.
After dropping the first set, the duo of Paes- Stepanek broke their opponents twice in the second set to win the set and then force a tie breaker in the final sets. In the deciding set, the Indian- Czech pair were trailing 1-4, but six straight points helped them move ahead and a volley by Stepanek finally sealed the match which lasted for 82 minutes. closed out the victory with an unreturnable volley to clinch the win in 82 minutes.
This was Paes’ 50th doubles and became only the 24th player in the history to have achieved the feat.
"It's really, really special. 50 tournaments takes a little doing. 600 matches takes a little bit of doing. Having done a three peat here in Miami is awesome. Next year, I hope to start another one," Paes was quoted by ATP World Tour.com.
