Chennai: Stan Wawrinka prevailed over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-final of Aircel Chennai Open, here on Friday. The top seed secured the win in 77 minutes.
Wawrinka will now meet Benoit Paire, who defeated qualifier Thomas Fabbiano in the Italian’s first ATP World Tour quarter-final appearance. Paire scored a straight sets win, beating Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano 6-4 7-5 after spending 80 minutes on the court.
The other semi-final will pit young gun Borna Coric -- who survived a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1) nail-biter against Roberto Bautista Agut -- against Aljaz Bedene, a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 winner over local wild card Ramkumar Ramanathan.
Bedene and Ramanathan battled it out for 2 hours 13 minutes, in their first meeting ever. The 21-year-old Ramanathan, playing in his maiden ATP quarter-final, gave a terrific fight to a top-50 player and saved four match points before losing an intensely-fought singles quarterfinal 7-6(5) 4-6 3-6 to Britain's number two player.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Somdev Devvarman-Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan beat Ramkumar Ramanathan-N Sriram Balaji 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 to set up a semi-final clash against Austin Krajicek-Benoit Paire on Saturday.
