India at Rio Olympics Day 2 Live: Dipa Karmakar becomes first ever Indian to qualify for apparatus finals of artistic gymnastics

Deepika Kumari archerRio de Janeiro: Though Day 1 wasn’t that fruitful for the Indian contingent at Rio Olympics as except for the men’s hockey team and rower Dattu Bhokanal, rest, including the pair of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna and ace shooter Jitu Rai failed to impress and crashed out of the tournament, Day 2 will again see several Indians in action across nine events and four sports, including women's hockey, women's gymnastics, women's 10m air pistol, men's trap and the women's team archery event.

India’s ace woman shooter Heena Sidhu carries the expectation of millions of Indians in 10m air pitol while Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai will be seen in action in men's trap. Dipa Karmakar, who became the Indian woman gymnast to qualify in the Olympics, will too be in action in artistic competition, while the team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi will fight it against Colombia in the round-of-16. Meanwhile, the Indian women's hockey will face Japan.

Gymnastics: Dipa Karmakar, India’s first ever female gymnast at the Olympics, became the first ever Indian to qualify for the apparatus finals of artistic gymnastics at the Rio Olympics. She finished eighth with a score of 14.850 to qualify for the vault finals that will take place on August 14. USA’s Simone Bile bagged the first spot with a score of 16.050.

Archery: Deepika Kumari, Bombayla and Laxmirani fail to perform under pressure. Crash out in quarters. Russia reach semis.
