Vijender questions AIBA-appointed ad-hoc committee’s decision to seek a wildcard entry for Mary Kom, says why such favour not accorded to him

Not yet ready to give up on his Rio Olympics dream, Vijender Singh has questioned the AIBA-appointed ad-hoc committee’s decision to seek a wildcard entry for five-time world champion Mary Kom for the upcoming Summer Games, saying why such a favour couldn’t be accorded to him, says a report in Chandigarh Tribune.

“Alleging that the ad-hoc committee is biased against him, Vijender said no one was ready to listen to his case back home after he made public his intention to participate in Rio. The three-time Olympian from Bhiwani felt that his matter should also be taken up by committee chairman Kishen Narsi with AIBA as his stature is no less than Mary Kom’s,” says the report.

“Why can’t there be a wildcard entry for me? Why won’t the ad-hoc committee demand the same for me from AIBA?” Vijender told The Tribune from his training base in Manchester, where he is preparing for his WBO Asia Pacific title bout in Delhi on July 16.

According to a report in the DNA, Vijender said the boxing administrators in India haven't taken kindly to his decision of turning pro. "It seems that I am no longer competing for India. The officials believe that since I have turned pro, I shouldn't have a chance of going to Rio. They feel they shouldn't help me because I no longer represent India in amateur boxing. I am fighting my professional bouts under the tri-colour. My name is announced as 'Vijender Singh from India'. All my victories in the pro circuit are for India. My Asian title bout will be for India," he said.
