Singapore: There was palpable excitement here at the Singapore Indoor Stadium as day 2 of the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League 2015 got underway. The last 4 league stage matches to be played tonight, with three teams vying for to make it second on the leaderboard, day 2 promised some exciting tennis action for thousands of fans gathered here. And what a day it was – the Mavericks leading the first 2 sets, the Royals not wanting to give up, equalised the score in the 3rd set, the Mavericks won the next, and the Royals then equalised once again!
The crowds delirious with both teams now tied at 23-all … fans got to see the first super shootout of IPTL 2015, with a men’s singles deciding the match-winner! The 19-point super tie breaker saw Karlovic and Cilic face-off for their teams, with Karlovic powering the Mavericks first to win 10 points, and close the match 24-23 in their favour!
Match Summary:
- James Blake was in superb form as he set off against Goran Ivanisevic in the legends action, taking the set 6-4
- Jarmila Gadjosova gave the Mavericks a 2-set lead winning 6-3 comfortably over Kristina Mladenovic, the Mavericks off to a great start
- Mixed doubles action saw tables turn as Mladenovic/Nestor hammered Gajdosova/Devvarman 6-1 in just twenty minutes, the shortest set of the evening, equalizing the match score even though 1 set down
- In what seemed like a swinging pendulum, Huey/Roger-Vasselin won the men’s doubles 6-4 until Cilic equalized yet again for the Royals, both teams now tied at 23-all at the end of 5 set
- The atmosphere in the stadium now electric, tension in the air, as the men’s singles took the courts for a super shoot-out with the first to 10 points winning the set and match, and Karlovic delivered the goods for the Mavericks in what was an evenly contested match!
