Colombo: Virat and Company showed their mettle as India went on to win the third and final Test against Sri Lanka by 117 runs and the Test series against the Island nation after a gap of 22 years, and on foreign soil since 2011. Not many teams have come back from a 0-1 deficit to win a Test series, and that too away from home and this is what makes this team different.
Ecstatic about the victory, Indian captain said that being 0-1 down was never easy and achieving a historic feat with such a young team was commendable. “I was told it has never been done away from home. So we in a way we created a bit of history. Even guys like Bhuvi, Varun and Bhajji, who haven’t played, ran around and helped everyone. It feels nice to win a series, especially with such a young team, early in our careers. It’s a magnificent milestone, winning here for the first time in 22 years,” said Kohli, adding that injuries were something that frustrates a team.
“But the attitude has been brilliant. Pujara came in after someone was injured and he saw it as an opportunity and not difficulty. That is why we are playing the kind of cricket we are playing. There are areas we want to improve on, but over the series, we can count the number of sessions we were bad on one hand. Really proud of the boys,” said the skipper.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews said, "We are disappointed. We could have done better, especially after winning a crucial toss and them batting in demanding conditions. To it, our batting flopped again. The bowlers were outstanding. Later, after giving them a 100-run lead, we did not bat well. We could have kept them under 300 in the first innings. The bowlers bowled pretty well, but India batted well. Our first innings batting was crucial. We needed to get close to 300. India bowled really well.”
