Rio de Janeiro: It was a day of heartbreaks for Indian contingent as just minutes after Indian men’s hockey team conceded a last minute goal to lose 1-2 to World Champion Germany, India’s ace shooter Abhinav Bindra, too, found luck betraying him as the Beijing Olympics gold medallist missed a place in the medal round by a whisker.
Bindra lost a tension-filled shoot-off against Ukrainian marksman S Kulish the men's 10m air rifle event after the two were tied third at 163.8 in the race to reach the medal round. In the shoot-off, the Indian scored 10 points to 10.5 of the Ukrainian. Meanwhile, Gagan Narang failed to qualify for the final round. Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai too could not reach the the Olympics men's trap semifinals, signing off at 16th and 19th respectively on the second and final day of qualification.
Woman archer Laxmirani Majhi, too, failed to impress as in the individual elimination round one and bowed out without a fight against Alexandra Longova of Slovakia. Majhi lost the contest 1-7.
In men's hockey, India put up a spirited performance and matched the defending Olympic champions in every department, finally losing the plot in the last minute. The Germans exerted tremendous pressure on the Indian defence in the final two minutes. The Indian defence fumbled in the final seconds as Christopher Ruhr scored the winner for Germany with a deflection. Earlier, Germany had taken the lead through a field goal from Niklas Wellen (18th minute) but Rupinder Pal Singh (23rd) drew parity for India by converting his third penalty corner of the Games.
Meanwhile, Indian women's hockey team had a forgettable outing against Britain as it lost 0-3 in the Pool B match. Giselle Ansley, Nicola White and Alexandra Danson scored for the winners.
In swimming, Sajan Prakash failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the men's 200 metre butterfly. Prakash clocked 1:59.37 in Heat 1 finishing fourth, while Shivani Kataria, too, was knocked out in 200m freestyle heats.
